-Dr.Farokh Master.
WIZARD OF OZ Has anyone seen the wizard of Oz? In the wizard of Oz there is an image of a cowardly lion, not that all Lycopodium are that way but it’s such a classic exaggerated image of Lycopodium ; you have to talk about that first as relating to Lycopodium; really tough and brave. He goes up to little rabbits and sneaks up on them and he scares the rabbits and frightens them. The rabbits freak out. But then he’s walking through the forest and a little mouse runs by and he freaks out. He roars and growls and frightens everyone but if you challenge him he is real meek and timid. You’ll see that type of dichotomy in a Lycopodium person.

They pretend to be something they are not. They’re not who they think they are – that’s the idea. Sometimes they put on gigantic bluffs about it and other times they put on other facades that can be a little more tricky to see. You take a Lycopodium child and they have very similar circumstances to Staphysagria. The story is like Staphysagria but the effects are more on the mental plane. Staphysagria, the attack and their facade are more on the emotional plane. A typical image of Lycopodium is if they have an older brother or sister who is very intelligent and gets straight A’s and is very athletic, and the younger child has to live up to this image; and everyone is always comparing them. There is a comparison syndrome in that family. That person always compares themselves with someone else or someone else compares them with someone or they compare themselves with others. They are compared with someone else and therefore they have to change functions to compensate for that. So you have an athletic older brother and you have a younger brother who is timid and shy. With a Lycopodium you may only see a little shyness, being timid, bashful. They are naturally that way and very sensitive. Another good word for them is meek. They don’t want to raise their voice or scream or do all these things; it is not their nature. They are timid and mousy. A lot of remedies start off like this. Silica starts off like this; Staphysagria can start off like this but they have more powerful emotions. They can’t function physically as well so they retreat to the mental plane and become more intellectual and more into things that are safe in that respect. They can’t get rough like Nux Vomica, Calcarea or Sulphur children.

Then the stress comes when you have this meek, shy, timid, sensitive child and he starts to become put down by someone. A domineering parent or sibling may do this. They call the person dumb and stupid and it doesn’t affect them so much. In the first stage, they begin to get self-doubt : “Am I dumb?” Am I stupid?” “Am I ugly?”. They actually start to intellectualize what the people are telling them and self-doubt starts creeping up. They look in the mirror and look how they are built or how they run or how they talk.

A lot of times will be an etiology for Lycopodium because they get laughed at and ridiculed and embarrassed. It can be from being overweight as a child or having a funny accent or having some funny facial features like a large nose or a birthmark on their face. These are all things that will invite reprimand from their peers, siblings or family. There are many different ways that the same Lycopodium picture will come out. They start getting self-doubt about who they are and they become more sensitive. Out of this comes a state of self-consciousness. It’s like every eye is on you. They go out and are dressed in a certain way and they go to a party, an 8-year-old birthday party, and they are dressed in some shoes that they Know are out-of-date and they just feel that everyone is looking at them. It’s a feeling of vulnerability but it’s around the face. There is an emotional vulnerability about being embarrassed, Natrum Muriaticum feel put it more in their chest. With Lycopodium, their self- consciousness is an anxiety, nervousness, awareness or fear that everyone is watching them. They feel shaky and nervous because of the self-doubt. They are starting to believe that they are dump, stupid, and incompetent. All these ideas are coming in there that make them doubt themselves and makes them self-conscious.

Then the putting down of the domineering parent or sibling is still working on the Lycopodium child and not helping him grow and resolve it, but actually adding to this self-doubt. This sets up the Lycopodium for a lot of anxieties and worries about themselves and performance. School, all of a sudden, becomes important to them; sitting in school and getting good grades, because if they do something wrong they will confirm what everyone else thinks about them and what they are beginning to believe about themselves. Don’t take a nap and wet the bed and all the children will wake up and point at the mattress and that will be it. So they start projecting out about all these things : self-doubt, becoming self-conscious and then projecting out these worries and anxieties. They start speaking in front of a group and give a book report and the teacher asks them a question and as soon as that question is asked the whole state comes in: self- doubt, self-conscious, it all kicks in. They are timid, shy, meek children. All these things about school and being tested cause these fears to start creeping up. Then what happens? They are going to get an embarrassing, humiliating circumstance happen to them. Why? We all have that happen to us but they are more susceptible to this and the process that has come before has set them up for it. F or someone else, like a Sulphur, children laugh at them and he says they don’t know what they are talking about and they leave and come back the next day. It doesn’t bother them.

Lycopodium will have their embarrassment or embarrassments; they fainted in front of their friends when they were eight or nine or ten years old; getting up in front of class and forgetting the words they were to say, or having the teacher call on them and they will not be able to answer and everyone will laugh at them. That happens everyday in school but Lycopodiums are susceptible. This is their shock. It may be trivial or mild or severe. It may be devastating, getting reprimanded, put down or beat up. Something shatters their confidence. Then they believe what everyone was saying about them. They have no confidence. Lycopodium says no confidence and they are talking about being incapable so it is a capability for them to do certain things and perform in certain ways. It’s a functional capability. It’s not that no one loves them, or that they are not worthy of being loved-it’s capability. They can’t keep up with their peers and their friends.

INCAPABLE OF MEETING LIFE’S RESPONSIBILITY.

SENSE OF INADEQUACY

NO CONFIDENCE

Inside they begin to feel inadequate and this is the essence, deep inside there is a sense of inadequacy. They are inadequate and incapable of meeting life’s responsibilities, of keeping up with their peers and comparing themselves with other people and they are always doing that. Performance anxiety, dealing with society, their peers, their family, everyone in general. It’s how they stand facing the whole world and they feel that they are not adequate to do that. They feel that way because they are comparing themselves to someone else and there’s always someone more confident, more rich, more successful, more intelligent than them. It’s a no-win situation. They can get distinction in final Homoeopathic examination and suddenly they read about someone who has done research in Repertory and has a medal or recognition and they will feel inadequate, then out of this comes their anticipation.

Lycopodiums may have one little failure in school but that haunts them and they never want to be embarrassed like that again.

FEARS – Of being unable to reach his destination.

– In the morning. – in the evening. – at night. – OF BEING ALONE

– Of others approaching him. – of the bed. – in a crowd. – in the dark. – of death. – of death – in the morning. – of ghosts – of ghosts – in the evening. – of ghosts – at night. – something will happen. – arising from heart. – OF MEN. – from noise. – from noise

– at door. – OF PEOPLE. – of people – children. – on entering room.

– arising from stomach. – at trifles. – undertaking anything. – on waking. – on waking – from a dream. – while walking. – while walking in open air.

INTER-PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP What happens when a Lycopodium falls in love ?

As long as everything is going all right in their life, they are confident and are in a good relationship, they can function all right. Then something rocks the boat and their old fears come up and they start feeling shaky and inadequate. Then they start getting the fear that someone will notice it, someone close to them will reject them. Every time two people get close there is going to be some friction and some growing problems and when that happens it stimulates the old pattern of Lycopodium. They start comparing themselves again. They start comparing their relationship with other relationships. They start to get frightened that this person will notice their inadequacies. This is where Lycopodium jealousy comes out.

JEALOUSY

Lycopodium patients due to their own inadequacies get shakier. The shakier he gets the more he anticipates her going out and finding someone else and jealousy comes up out of the feeling of inadequacy. Gradually the relationship gets sabotaged. They just don’t want their issues of being exposed to come up. It’s the ego being embarrassed. If they don’t break it off then everyone will look at them and say they weren’t good enough.

SABOTAGING Relationship Career Job

Lycopodium are sincere workers, they work day and night, when they start hearing whispers that they are going to be promoted, they will sabotage the job and quit but will give an impression to outsiders that they don’t want to work there. Someone is retiring and they will have all that responsibility and that will increase their possibility of failing, therefore, these fears of failing will sabotage their situation and leave it to save their face and talk to everyone that they get out of it.

FALSE IMAGE IN SOCIETY They pretend to be outgoing, extroverted, sociable, fast and fancy free etc. They can even start lying. LYING is a strong word for Lycopodium. A better word is exaggerating. They go to a party and there are a lot of people there and a famous person is at the party. For the next three weeks everyone at the job hears about it but the story is exaggerated. Then they find they can get away with it. Then they get admiration and reassurance and everyone believes them. Then the whole cycle gets reinforced. Then they start living in a facade. That is their identity.

INFLATED EGO Their ego gets inflated. It’s like they are acting. Lycopodium are good actors. They can act out their role in life that they created in their mind so well that you think they are such nice people or that’s a smart or intelligent or strong person. They go to that person for advice. Rarely can you get through that bluff and inflated ego and see who is there. You have an inflated ego and hints of their story and then you have a few keynotes you have a Lycopodium. Then you have to go through and figure out what is going on.

They become critical and look down on everyone and are patronizing. Here is where authority figures become a big issue It’s an issue all the way through. They either identify with authority or have a deep, deep fear about authority. They are freaked out about it. Going to get a job for a Lycopodium is a major stress. Filling out a job application, walking in there, having to reveal who they are and someone questioning them freak a Lycopodium out. If you ever want to freak a Lycopodium out look them in the eye. They are yelling and screaming and keep looking at their eye and they will change. You don’t have to have anger on their face but you look in them and say I know you, so forget it. Just look. A lot of times you are taking a case and you want some information or you want to test them you look right at them and say what about this and what about that. You will see them back off and see their eyes get really shaky or talking out of the side of their mouth. But the whole rest of the interview they are really sure of themselves and confident. They cannot handle challenge.

They get power hungry. Because power is an air that pumps up their ego and their ego is the balloon that hides their inadequate feelings. The thing with the ego is that it is a see- through balloon. This is when they enter politics. A lot of politicians (Ign., Nat. Mur. Calc., Lyc., Nux Vom.). Lycopodium runs for the power and the stature, the ego, the class, society. Nux Vomica is for money and success and ambition. This is when they start dominating people; yelling, screaming, hitting, hurting people because they are tough and strong, but they are tough and strong because they know inside that they are nobody, so they are constantly trying to prove themselves. Here you have a hard time differentiating Lycopodium from Anacardium. Anacardium has a deep, deep poor self-confidence with a strong, passionate desire to prove themselves. Anacardium are hard and mean and they will hurt you and do criminal acts. They will rob and beat you up to feel strong. Lycopodium is a step less than that. They take it out on women or children or the TV or the dog or cat ; someone or something that can’t fight back. Even with their own peers they wilt. But with someone who works underneath them, it becomes a perfect picture of a Nux Vomica, but the story is different. They are functioning like a Nux Vomica – ambitious and strong-willed and dominating -but you will see that they have cut themselves out an area in life where they are king of the castle. This is where they put on bluffs. Then what happens?

They have a shock and something pops their bubble. It’s like a balloon in the air and someone lets the air out and it comes down. They go into a stage where they start getting defensive. Before they were big talkers with a lot of ideas, a lot of big plans about everything they are going to do but they never get anything done. At this stage all their ideas and their power and their whole social structure starts falling apart and they become defensive and mean and very argumentative. They will argue with you about everything to prove that they are right and know what they are talking about it. Before they had a sense of power that they did not have to go out of their way to do that but when their big thrust in life to conquer their little patch fails then they become more and more defensive and more and more sensitive to criticism. Criticism will cause a reaction here; yelling and screaming. They will walk out of the house cursing someone out. The husband asks the wife to get a job and she freaks out. She gets mean and defensive and sensitive or vice versa. They had all this and they were riding on cloud 9 but it didn’t last because the whole structure was based on something that wasn’t real and was shaky. It’s like a shaky, thin post with a big platform on top; one stress and it collapses. It wasn’t a real foundation. They created it all and was a big bluff.

Then their fears come out. Deeper fears: illness, being alone, the ultimate failure, fear of a nervous breakdown (a big one). There’s a big rubric; fear that they will not reach their destination. That’s the image of Lycopodium; that they will have a breakdown and not reach their destination. Hypochondriacal. A lot of their anxiety about their health is related to their over concern with their appearance. Lycopodium dress up-mentally, emotionally, and physically. They dress up their ideas and thoughts and give them to people, and they dress up their body with a lot of make up and jewelry. They are living this whole life of someone that they want to be and eventually that starts falling apart.

This defensive, mean stage of Lycopodium can be hard to see; very sensitive and mean. They will have a hard appearance to them. They can be very hard. Then they start freaking out and this hardness breaks away. Then they go into deeper fears: fear of going out of the house; fears of doing anything; fears of dying. Another image of Lycopodium are weight lifters; lifting those weights and looking really tough like football players. They are very into their macho image. Lycopodium women are really sleazy. It’s an overdressed look. Lycopodium men will abuse their wife and children when they are defensive and hard.

ANXIETY

Sexual performance is a big issue with Lycopodium. With this all their cards are laid on the table when they are in bed. They are going to wake up in the morning being embarrassed (not guilty or bad) that they weren’t good enough. They are having sex and they are always looking at the other person to see if they are enjoying themselves and if they are, Lycopodium will relax a little. Lycopodium likes safe things like that-sex, good food. They put on a front of living according to certain levels; cars, etc. Inside you talk to them alone and they melt. They are so tough and mean on their territory and in their circumstances until you talk to them. Here they have several crisis in making decisions. Irresolution. Should they do this or that becomes a heavy thing for Lycopodium. Should they go to the store now or later? They are agoraphobic and they have fears and start having panic attacks. It’s like an adrenal flush. They panic. This is why they are in this agoraphobic stage that something is going to happen. They are going to get hit by a car, anything. They start panicking and become so self-conscious and so sensitive and feel so inadequate that they panic. It’s like a rocket ship takes off and explodes inside and they shake and tremble. They learn to avoid new situations and things that will bring out these panic attacks. They will get in a car but they won’t be able to get on the highway. If someone goes by and beeps their horn they panic. They become shaky and messed up and they just can’t do it. You’ll see it in sex and driving cars and swimming, etc. They will have panic attacks where they get really uptight and nervous and they can’t control it. At this stage it’s going to look like Arsenicum, Phosphorous, Lycopodium with these panic attacks and feeling very sensitive (Kali Ars., Med.). They avoid those situations at all costs. When they panic they get states of mental confusion. They get fear of insanity and they get a spaced out thing. Somewhere along this line they can become senile – early senility. Their mind breaks down. Everything that they felt would happen. They get grey hair and they are 34 years old. They can’t make decisions. You have these older people who freak out when the phone rings because they can’t handle it. They freak out at the slightest request. They think that they will not be able to do it; that something will happen.

They have pretty healthy feelings. They can love and express their feelings; it’s the things on the mental plane. I imagine poor confidence as a mental problem not an emotional one; but it leads to emotional problems and this self-conscious feeling. It’s mental self-image problem.

When they are at an earlier stage, they get fearful three or four days before getting up in front of a group but 2-3 minutes into their talk and they are fine. This is when they have found their little space in the world and they are comfortable doing it. They find it and gravitate it and make that their identity. It’s not what they do; it’s not what they do; it’s who they are.
