OIL OF TURPENTINE.

Introduction
“One part by weight of purified oil of turpentine is dissolved on ninety-nine pats by weight of alcohol” (Am, Hom. Phar.). making our strongest preparation the 1st. Terebinth. was first proved by Dr. Seidel, of Germany.
Symptoms
Its most marked action is on the kidneys and the mucous membrane of he urinary tract, where it causes general irritation and profuse haemorrhages from the kidneys(85) as well as strangury, and in the great majority of cases where we prescribe it there will be some urinary symptoms to guide us in its solution. It also irritates the bronchial and intestinal; mucous membrane, causing cough and haemoptysis (27), and loose and bloody evacuations from the bowels, with the second pronounced indication for he remedy, marked tympanitis (13). Even the inhalation of he vapor of turpentine “produces nasal and bronchial irritation, frontal headache, and renal irritation, even bloody urine and strangury” (Bartholow). Terebinth is to be thought of in r-sided ciliary neuralgia (75) and in rheumatic iritis (74),with intense pain in the eye, associated with burning in the region of the kidneys and dark,, scanty urine, as well as in amblyopia due to alcohol. It is of great value in abdominal dropsy (11), dependent especially upon inflammations of the kidneys, and in peritonitis, perhaps due top pelvic disorders, when complicated with bladder troubles and excessive tympanitis. In diarrhoea calling for Terebinth. We have three symptoms, which taken together mean only this remedy;’ they are the excessive tympanitis, the red, sore and shining tongue, which characteristic, and the urinary indications which we will now speak of in detail. The urine is bloody and smoky, and there is strangury when voiding it (194), with burning in the region of he kidneys and pain extending down to the bladder. With these symptoms it is of great value in croupous nephritis (124), especially when it follows from any acute disease. It is also of frequent use in acute congestion of the kidneys, particularly from cold, associated with haemorrhage from the kidneys (85). (When you find inflammation of the kidneys, with bloody urine, dysuria and constant tenesmus, due top the inhalation of fumes of oil of turpentine, especially in women who faint for pastime, give Cantharis. One must keep in mind that pregnant women should never be exposed top the fume of turpentine owing top its effect open the kidneys). Terebinth. is one of the remedies to be thought of when the urine smells as of violets (200). In acute cystitis calling for the remedy we would have burning pain in the region of the kidneys, dysuria and tenesmus. Terebinth. is top be thought of where haemoptysis (27) relieves the congestion of the lungs, and in bronchi-pneumonia (151), with scanty, bloody urine. It has been found useful; in bed-sores (210 in paralytics and for purpura haemorrhagica (158) with great weakness. In typhoid fever it will prove of value in haemorrhage from the bowels (193), associated with bloody urine, excessive tympanitis and drug, glossy tongue. I use Terebinth. 30th.

SPHERE OF ACTION
Through the cerebro-spinal system, acts especially upon the mucous membrane of the kidneys, and intestinal canal. The sentient nerves, and blood are also acted upon by this remedy.
GRAND CHARACTERISTICS
Congestion and inflammation of the urinary organs, with scanty, high colored urine. Burning drawing pains in the kidneys. Blood is thoroughly mixed with the urine, like coffee-ground sediment. Pressure in the bladder, extending up- – into the kidneys when sitting, disappearing when walking. — HALE. Digestive Organs.- Tongue smooth and glossy, as if deprived of its papillae, in typhoid fevers. — WOOD. Also the tongue is red and glossy, in stomatitis and entero- colitis. Stomatitis materna, extending from the mouth to the anus; tongue very sore, red and glossy, burning like fire; immense tympanitis; stools copious; watery, greenish, very fetid; has from ten to twenty from 12 a.m. to 12 p.m.; fainting after each stool; pulse 125, weak and wiry, with no pain. Entero-colitis, with frequent and exhaustive stools, greatly aggravated from 12 a.m. to 12 p.m. Accompanied with a red glossy tongue; great tympanitis; no pain. Entero-colitis, with hemorrhages and ulceration of the bowels, especially epithelial degeneration. — HALE. Stools of mucus and water, more in the morning. — HALE. I have found that the stools are more in afternoon and evenings, where Turpentine has acted most beautifully. Griping, pinching colic, with muco-purulent stools. Burning in the right hypochondrium. — LIPPE. This is a most excellent remedy in chronic diarrhoea. And for hemorrhages from the bowels in typhoid fever we have no better remedy. Worms, with foul breath; choking sensation in the throat; dry, hacking cough; vertigo, &c. Great languor and loss of strength. — HOLCOMBE. In Diarrhoea, prostration is a very prominent symptom. Air passages.– Dryness of the mucous membranes of the air- passages. — LIPPE. Burning in the chest along the sternum. — LIPPE. Head.- Neuralgia, and nervous headaches. Mind clear, then unconscious, followed by inability to concentrate his mind. — F. W. ROGERS, M.D. Exhilaration; steep hills were mounted without effort.- ROGERS. This remedy has not been used so much as it should be; in chronic diarrhoea; stomatitis; hemorrhage from the bowels, and in typhoid fever, it is of great value. Also in many cases of neuralgia.

Burning and smarting on passing urine; urine red, brown, black or SMOKY in appearance.

Tongue smooth, glossy, red, with excessive tympanites (typhoid).

Haemorrhages from outlets especially in connection with urinary or kidney troubles.

TEREBINTHINA ought to come in here, because it,like BERBERIS ,has much pain in the back with kidney and bladder troubles. Painters working under the smell of turpentine are often seriously affected by it. Some are unable to work in it. In the turpentine kidney troubles there is apt to be more strangury then the BERBERIS and more blood in urine. The urine becomes brown, black,or more smoky in appearance from more or less admixture of blood. For burning and smarting on passing urine,TURPENTINE stands nearer to CANTHARIS or CANNABIS SATIVA than it does to BERBERIS. All 4 may be found useful in the first stage of albuminuria,TURPENTINE taking the lead, and it may sometimes require considerable study to choose between them. MERC COR., generally comes later. TEREBINTH. is one of our best anti haemorrhagic remedies. Haematuria, haemoptysis, and haemorrhage from the bowels, especially in typhoid, and even in purpura it may do splendid work. One of the chief characteristics for its use is the SMOOTH,GLOSSY,RED TONGUE (CROTALUS,PYROGEN);another is EXCESSIVE TYMPANITES. These two symptoms are often found in typhoids, and then TEREB., is the remedy. Dropsy after scarlatina, with smoky urine, may find its remedy here, but LACH.,APIS.,HELL.,or COLCH., will often dispute claims with it. The old school makes great use of it in many other affections as a local application. I have seen some bad effects from its use in that way for the chest in pneumonia in their hands. I would not recommend it.
